It has indeed!!!
I have been busy with life! and busy with exhibiting my artwork at the a wonderful Montague Art Gallery in Worthing (28 Portland Road Worthing, BN11 1QN). The truth is to be honest that I am not very good with the social media and technology stuff! I try! but I would much rather spend time in my studio creating and papercutting! I am getting quite obsessed with my Dioramas housed in recycled sardine tins! They are time consuming but such fun to make. I spent hours going through old books and girls annuals to find the perfect bits to fit in the tins! And I can hear you ask .... do you like and eat a lot of sardines then? The answer is yes! but I also have fellow artists and friends saving their tins for me, so I have a regular supply! And no! they don't smell! as I wash and scrub them thoroughly sometimes more than once! So here are a few I made earlier! You will find that there are a few designs that I make again and again but they may vary in colour or a few details and as they are all handmade by me each are unique. A few years ago, whilst on holiday in France, a bought a small item from a flea market called a Canivet. You will see from the picture what attracted me to it! It is a bit like a papercut with an image in the centre. The Canivet is an art connected to small holy pictures and it was probably born in France, mostly crafted by monks and nuns in the 18th century, with a small knife called "canif", which they have taken their name "canivet" from. This kind of works soon spread outside monasteries. Besides being devotion objects (also called Prayer Cards), the Canivets were also used to celebrate anniversaries and to gladden events. There are many example of canivets, I am drawn to the beauty of the craft rather than it’s purpose. It took me a while to draw inspiration from it, pined up on my wall in front of my desk, I would often gaze at it and so one day during lockdown, I finally got an idea. I experimented and today I am ready to share the results with you. Here are a few photos but you can see the artwork on display at the Montague Gallery from Sunday 13th June when I will also be there (until 1pm) if you would like to pop in for a chat! Here is an interesting blog post I came across about Canivet in Italy.
https://www.casacenina.com/blog/canivet-the-ancient-paper-art.html Further information about 19th Century "Canivet Holy cards" . Bouasse-Lebel printing house was founded in Paris by Eulalie Lebel in 1845 at the age of 36. Her family had a long history of being in the printing business: her father was a printer and engraver, and her maternal grandfather was a printer and librarian. Her marriage to François-Marie Bouasse, (who was also from a printing family) ended poorly, however, and Eulalie was forced to find a way to support herself and her two sons. She decided to do this by founding her own printing company. Thus, the Maison Bouasse-Lebel was born. Both printing works were famous for the unusual design of their religious printing art, in particular for their delicate, precious lace images. The machine-punched lace pictures of the 19th century replaced the paper and parchment cut picture created in the early 17th century as a new type of small devotional picture, which was more widely used than the hand-made picture due to the industrial, reproducible production. The Bouasse-Lebel company was one of the leading manufacturers of these small pictures in France, most of which had the company name printed on them. The delicate lace and embossed images are coveted collectors' items today and are traded between 5.00 and approx. 80.00 euros depending on the features (e.g. lace decoration, hand-colored engraving, chromolithography). https://uscscholycards.wordpress.com/production-houses/maison-bouasse-lebel/ I am back!!!!

Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information about workshops. Looking forward to hear from you! Looking for Laura!!!!
One of my favourite paper cut design is perfect for music sheets. I always choose a music sheet that not only looks attractive for it's colour and pattern of the music notes but also for it's title. I cannot read music but if the tittle and the print looks good, I will use it for my paper cuts. I always look out for names too. To list a few so far, Helen and Stephanie both found lovely owners. But surprisingly, I have one which sadly is still in my browser: Laura! The music sheet is a waltz entitled "Laura" from an opera entitled 'The Beggar Student'. It is a rather gentle lovely waltz, see this link to listen to it! "Laura Walzer from The Beggar Student" #54. Played On Stella 17 1/4 Inches. - YouTube I have also looked it up and here is a quick show synopsis : Naples, 1840. A rascally Colonel in the Austrian Army of Occupation plans revenge on a girl who has rebuffed him - Laura, one of the two daughters of an impoverished Italian Countess. He releases two young prisoners on condition they masquerade as a wealthy Prince and his secretary. The 'Prince' has to win Laura's hand, and then humiliate her. How the young men fall in love with the two girls and completely turn the tables on the Colonel is splendidly told in this tuneful operetta. So if you know a Laura who you think would love this hand cut unique paper cut, do get in touch! x Sylvie I was inspired by my country walks with our dog Daisy to make some wild flowers creations using maps of course and an embossing technique that I recently discovered.
It is fun to do although time consuming. I have chosen corn flowers, poppies and still in the making (so no photos yet), buttercups mainly because these are colours I could easily find in the maps that I use. I will be taking these to the Newtimber Country & Vintage Fayre later on this month but here is a sneak peak!!! |
